Next-gen HD Wii rumored to be slated for 2011

The Nintendo Wii is still insanely popular as we approach its two year anniversary, but that doesn't mean Nintendo is sitting on its laurels. No, they're thinking about the future and planning on the Wii's successor already.

The upcoming console, tentatively referred to as the "Wii HD," is said to be based on entirely new hardware that will pump out HD visuals, contain expanded storage and run using digitally distributed content rather than physical discs, which is something widely rumored for all of the next-gen consoles. It's said to be on the slate for 2011, which sounds about right to us. But hey, let's not get too excited: the Wii still has some shelf life to it yet.

Wii pedometer on its way

Engadget is getting itself in a froth about a piece of equipment which has been found on a European trademark registry site, and is putting two and two together and coming up with five, claiming that it’s a Nintendo pedometer. With little supplemental information about the peripheral it’s hard to say that it’s definitely what it looks (a bit) like, though there’s no noticeable Wii branding, and I’m not convinced it’s necessarily the next evolutionary step for Wii Fit - or indeed related to a brand new game. Besides, we’ve already got Wii Jog on the way.

Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility, Farm, Animals & Kids

Life is simple. You maintain a farm, feed some animals, grow some veggies, partcipate in festivals and get married to raise kids. If you look forward to this kind of life, you should try out the new Wii game, Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility, to have a taste of farm life.

Harvest Moon is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with this Wii installment. This Wii farm simulation game hasn’t changed much (you start out as a boy or girl) but you can use your Wii Remote to feel like you are really farming (motion control). Don’t worry, pushing buttons will also do the trick in case you get worn out.

A thing to note is that there’s no online support for this Wii Harvest Moon. However, do expect a greater variety of crops, animals, events and mini-games which are 4-player accessible in

Tomb Raider: Underworld heads underwater

Diving Video

Despite having her franchise rebooted a la Batman Begins, it saddens us to see acrobatic archeologist Lara Croft give in to her old, animal-killing habits. Sure, there's a modicum of guilty pleasure to be derived from watching her kick tigers in the face, but the above shark-slaying video simply lacks ... finesse. If watching the lithe leading lady go all Richard Dreyfuss on the wonders of the deep is something you find upsetting, we'd advise you to skip to the video after the break, where she runs around Mexico sticking poles in holes.

Play PES Wii the Old-Fashioned Way

Konami has lifted the lid on details of the Wii version of Pro Evolution Soccer, including support for the classic controller and a number of gameplay enhancements. Speaking at the PES European Finals in Rome, producer Akiyoshi 'Greyhound' Chosogabe revealed that the new game – which will be released in spring 2009 - will enable players to play the game using a conventional PES control scheme, either with a classic controller or by holding the Wii remote on its side and using the D-pad to control an individual player. Wii Music gets faintly garish new boxart

The appearance of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection logo next to the Touch Generations tag also gave me pause - is Wii Music’s target audience really going to bother that much with the online options? Isn’t part of Nintendo’s reluctance to truly embrace online down to its understanding that casual and non-gamers aren’t quite as web-savvy as their hardcore counterparts?

It’s going to be interesting to see whether Wii Music really does have as big an audience as Nintendo thinks. I predict that it will do okay, but won’t come anywhere near the level of success that Fit, Sports and Play have achieved. Now watch as no-one will be able to get a copy over Christmas for love nor money.

Brain Training - proof that it does work

A really interesting story about an educational experiment has emerged on the Learning And Teaching Scotland site, which essentially proves that Brain Training’s claims about sharpening your mind are absolutely spot on.

The study saw one group of children given the DS title for ten weeks, with the children allowed to play the game for between fifteen and twenty minutes in the morning. A second group started a Brain Gym program - a series of physical movements thought to improve learning and performance. The third set of students had access to neither.

After these training periods, the children were given two tests they’d already completed before the training took place, with the results from the two sets (before and after) compared - and some interesting findings emerged. While the Brain Gym students saw an improvement in the maths test results and a reduction in the time taken to complete the test, the DS group saw the most significant advances - particularly in the completion time, which was massively reduced. Evidently, the way that Brain Training grades you according to time taken as well as accuracy had an impact on the students who trained daily.

Force Unleashed racks up 1.5 million sales

LucasArts has revealed that the latest Star Wars title - The Force Unleashed - has sold 1.5 million copies worldwide in its first five days on sale across all platforms.

The title was released on September 16 in North America, September 17 in Australia and South-East Asia, and September 19 in Europe, and the strong demand so far has prompted the publisher to order more copies to be manufactured.

4.3 million units were initially shipped to the various territories, but the Krome Studios-developed game looks set to become the most popular Star Wars title to date.

"The record-setting sales of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed shows the undiminished power of Star Wars and its popularity across all media types, including videogames," said Darrell Rodriguez, president of LucasArts. "We're blown away by the response to the game."

Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2009

Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2009 puts players in bone chilling, pressure-packed hunting situations as they seek out savage animals in the world's most dangerous locations.

Players will face raw danger as they encounter the fiercest animals on earth, including lions, grizzly bears, jaguars and more. Accurately modeled Cabela’s equipment in the game means the firearms, tactics and gear are all realistic and precise – but this won’t always help in the face of an unpredictable, open environment packed with avalanches, elephant stampedes, and piranha infested waters. If you do miss a shot and fail to stop a charging man-eating animal, you will be forced to fight it via a melee defense – but pay attention; it's likely another nearby animal will join the attack.

WiiSpeak: How it works

So the WiiSpeak voice-chat mic which will allow you to chat to pals when playing Animal Crossing - even if (grr) you have to pay separately for the privilege of doing so - sits on top of your Wii’s sensor bar atop your telly, right? So what exactly is stopping it from picking up the noise from your telly instead of your conversations on the sofa? Nintendo EAD’s Katsuya Eguchi explains:

“There’s some noise filtering going on. It’s designed to pick up stuff other than what’s coming out of the TV. If you put this on your TV, if this was a regular microphone, you’d get your TV sound going in.....
